There are
various writings on the Indian left movement as part and parcel of the freedom
movement in India. Almost all those writings are about the activities of the Congress
Party as the frontal organisation of the Indian freedom movement and the unity
and struggle attitude maintained by the left groups with the Congress. On all
occasions when the Congress was in the movement mode the left groups were
united with them and at moments the Congress made compromises with the British
and withdrew movements after striking compromises they differed with it. This
trend and tendency of the Left formed the core of those writings.
In all those writings the political difference the leftists and
communists had with the Congress alone was highlighted. By and large Communist
Party of India was also not conducting a struggle on a higher plane and at an
elevated level in those days and even after that. With this limitation also the
leftist and communist of our soil did a lot of awe inspiring sacrifices during
the freedom movement. In the freedom movement
revivalism
was also a trend. Among those who espoused the cause of Hindu revivalism Bhagavad-Gita
and Karma yoga acted as the source of inspiration for their death defying acts
of valour and sacrifice. In one sense it was easy for the religious minded
revivalists who believed in the life after death to involve themselves in such
an ordeal since the belief of life after death acted as the consoling factor and
had helped in their coming forward to lay down even their precious lives on the
altar of the freedom movement.
But for the communist this solace was unavailable since they do not
believe in God and the life after death. They themselves had to emerge as God in
many respects with the qualities attributed to Him. For that the grasping of
the communists ideology in depth was required. The ups and downs faced by the
communists in their lives were not like those the Congress men and the other brave
soldiers who embraced the cause of freedom had faced. They could not simply adopt
the communism as an ideology and a concept of economics in their political life.
They had to adopt it in all walks of their life. While practising communist
politics they had to face opposition all around and they had to wage struggle
against many odds in this private property oriented society. For that they had to adopt communism not only
as the concept guiding their political life but also as the concept guiding their
very life itself. In short Communism had to be the mode of existence for a
communist.
There was no dearth of leadership in the international communists Movement
in leading such communistic way of life. Many leaders of the international
Communist movement not only led that noble life but they also enriched the
treasure house of Marxism with the experiences gained thereby. Every such
enrichment had the shade of the surrounding political and social environment of
the countries wherein those great leaders led their
political as well as life struggles. In our soil it was Com.Sibdas Ghosh who
attempted that all pervasive struggle in a distinctly different historic
period: a period starting from militant mass movement against imperialism to
conscious working class movement against domestic capitalism. With the
cherished experiences of his life as a revolutionary he enriched the treasure
house of Marxism with newer and newer concepts. The concept of identification in the
place of submission was one such milestone
in his contributions to Marxism.
In our times the revolutionary movement is at the receiving end after the
debacle socialism met with in the Soviet Union and in the erstwhile socialist
countries of Eastern Europe. In China also the debacle came through by the
usurpation of power by the roader of capitalism Deng Xiao ping and his coterie.
While we look at this painful scenario on one side, on the other side we
perceive many positive developments also. Working class movement all over the world
is steadily rising up. It has of its own come to the inevitable conclusion that
capitalism is not the last word and the end of history seeing that capitalism
all over the world is faced with insurmountable and all pervading economic crisis
and it is making the life of the working people intolerably miserable
everywhere. All the efforts the capitalist thinkers take to stave the system
off its crisis meet with utter failures. The artificial interventions they make
to put brakes in the operation of the capitalist economic law end not only in fiasco
but also end up in taking the crisis to newer and newer heights of unexpected
dimensions.
At this juncture the conscious working class throughout the world is in searching
mode to find the necessary ways and means for its emancipation from the yoke of
capitalism. For that it has to read anew
all the classical literature of Marxism and take up and practise the lessons
taught by those who tried to practice communism as a concept of their life.
There are only a few such noteworthy accounts available in the annals of left
movement for them to read and practice. One such account is that of the life
struggle of Com. Sibdas Ghosh. He, taking lessons from the shortcomings and
deficiencies of the mainstream communist parties in India tried to develop Marxism
as a concept of life. His life struggle is brought to the mainstream left
readers by one of his worthy followers and ardent disciples. Com. Shankar Singh
who was his close associate throughout his life has written an excellent book
on his life in a novel form.
Though many of the contributions made by Com.Sibdas Ghosh which were very much
relevant during his day has become not so relevant in today’s context of globalisation and the non
existence of socialist camp, the way he struggled relentlessly for the correct
grasp of Marxism ,the one and only guiding
force of social movement is worth emulating. In short one can safely say that one
who is capable of conducting such type of struggle that Com. Sibdas Ghosh
conducted in his life time can have the correct grasp of Marxism and can guide social
movement in the correct way and lead it even to its logical culmination of effecting
fundamental social change. Taking into account the historic significance
involved in this we are trying to publish it with the title Lest the Legend go untold.
This novel writing would undoubtedly evoke a lasting interest in the left
readers. It is certain that it will become a unique piece in the writings of
this sort one day or other. To bring this out we need financial help and assistance
with your kind of social minded people. We hope that you will come forward happily to
contribute liberally and will stand shoulder to shoulder with us in sharing the
financial responsibility involved in the publication of this book.
With
Revolutionary Greetings,
